Provide a framework and workflows for exploring and appraising low permeability shales, carbonates, and sandstones in frontier basins, as well as new areas in basins that are producing from unconventional reservoirs.

Course Content

Day 1

Topic #1: Introduction of water issues in unconventional resource developments (4 hours)

  1. Big picture of water issues in US unconventional developments
  2. How wastewater is being disposed and treated
  3. Social/environmental/economic concerns of wastewater disposal
  4. Trend and governance of water chemistry

Topic #2: Chemistry of flow back and produced water (4 hours)

  1. Components of fracturing fluids
  2. Downhole fates of fracturing fluid components
  3. Water chemistry of flow back water and formation water
  4. Workshop problem: Predict water production rates and chemical concentrations

Day 2

Topic #3: Engineered wastewater injection (8 hours)

  1. Water quality impacts on disposing well injectivity index
  2. Hydraulic analysis of water injection along wellbore
  3. Stochastic method to determine formation parting pressure during water disposal
  4. Quantify injectivity after matrix fracturing
  5. Surveillance and integrated management of wastewater disposal wells
  6. Matrix by-pass event for wastewater disposal
  7. Pressure fall-off test analysis for water injection well
  8. Workshop 1: Monte Carlo method to determine the maximum injection pressure for matrix injection
  9. Workshop 2: Calculation of injection pressure change with rate before and after target formation fracturing.
